Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni won the toss and elected to bat in the first cricket Test against Sri Lanka at the Motera stadium here on Monday.

Sri Lanka quick Chanaka Welegedara celebrated his return to test cricket with a withering three-wicket burst as India spluttered to 105 for four after the opening session of the first test at the Motera Monday.

India went in with two seamers in Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma, besides two spinners in Harbhajan Singh and Amit Mishra.

Sri Lanka left out seasoned seamers Nuwan Kulasekera and Thilan Thushara to play left-arm fast bowler Chanaka Welegedara and right-arm seamer Dammika Prasad.

Left-armer Rangana Herath joined Muttiah Muralitharan in a two-man spin attack ahead of unorthodox slow bowler Ajantha Mendis.
