Match facts

Start time 1700 (1600 GMT)

The Big Picture
Pakistan and Australia will spend the next month battling in the neutral territory of England and this Twenty20 at Edgbaston gives the teams their first glimpse at the opposition. Little is riding on the two-game Twenty20 series, given that it comes barely six weeks after the World Twenty20. But a one-sided contest to either team could provide a morale boost ahead of the two Tests later this month. Australia are coming off a lost ODI series, although they won the final two games, while Pakistan failed in the Asia Cup but also finished on a high when they thrashed Bangladesh.

Any team captained by Shahid Afridi and featuring Shoaib Akhtar cannot fail to fascinate. Akhtar might not have been at his fittest during the Asia Cup, but will the sight of Shaun Tait pressing 160kph spark him back towards his high-speed best? And will Afridi, who led Pakistan to the World Twenty20 semi-finals, find a way to end Pakistan’s losing streak of 12 matches against Australia across all formats?

The last time the teams met, it was a high-class encounter that brought nearly 400 runs and one of the most memorable finishes in the format’s short history, as Michael Hussey drove Australia into the World Twenty20 final. They needed 18 from the last over; Hussey did it with a ball to spare. There’s far less to play for this time, but the result is no doubt burned into the memories of the Pakistan players. Here’s their right of reply.

Form guide (Most recent first)
Australia LWWWW

Pakistan LWLLL

Watch out for
It’s been all about Shaun Tait over the past week, but he’ll be joined in a fierce new-ball attack in Birmingham by Dirk Nannes. There hasn’t been a place in Australia’s one-day line-up for Nannes, so he’s fresh after playing only Twenty20s for Nottinghamshire lately. His left-arm angle and speed always creates headaches and if the batsmen try to see Tait off and attack at the other end, it could spell success for Nannes.

Umar Akmal’s career is still in its infancy, but already he has the respect of the Australian bowlers. One-third of his international matches have been played against Australia and his ability to score quickly makes him especially dangerous in Twenty20s. The last time he met Michael Clarke’s men, he blasted an unbeaten 56 from 35 balls in the World Twenty20 semi-final.

Team news
The loss of Ryan Harris to a knee injury leaves Australia with 13 fit men in their squad, although that’s perhaps not the best way to describe the captain Michael Clarke. He missed the final ODI against England on Saturday with a sore back and although he will probably play on Monday, it’s not locked in yet, and his deputy Cameron White will be waiting for word on whether he will have to step up. The more likely scenario is James Hopes and Steve O’Keefe will sit out and the only change from the World Twenty20 final will be Tim Paine in for Brad Haddin.

Australia (possible) 1 Shane Watson, 2 David Warner, 3 Michael Clarke (capt), 4 David Hussey, 5 Cameron White, 6 Michael Hussey, 7 Tim Paine (wk), 8 Steve Smith, 9 Mitchell Johnson, 10 Dirk Nannes, 11 Shaun Tait.

Pakistan’s batting order is something of a mystery, but expect Shahzaib Hasan to open up with Salman Butt. Umar Gul should make his return from a shoulder injury that has kept him out of international action since Pakistan played England in Dubai in February.

Pakistan (possible) 1 Salman Butt, 2 Shahzaib Hasan, 3 Shoaib Malik, 4 Umar Akmal, 5 Shahid Afridi, 6 Kamran Akmal (wk), 7 Abdur Razzaq, 8 Umar Gul, 9 Shoaib Akhtar, 10 Saeed Ajmal, 11 Mohammad Aamer.

Pitch and conditions
The Edgbaston pitch might offer some turn, which would theoretically favour Pakistan, but there have been some good totals produced in the domestic Twenty20 there this year. If it’s humid – which is a distinct possibility – the ball could swing, which would make Tait, Nannes, Akhtar and Gul very dangerous.

Stats

* Umar Gul and Shahid Afridi are the two leading wicket takers in Twenty20 internationals; Australia’s first entry on the worldwide list is Mitchell Johnson at number eight
* Australia’s top two run scorers in Twenty20s are David Warner and David Hussey, neither of whom currently play for their country in any other format
* The teams have met in five Twenty20s; Pakistan won the first two and Australia have won the past three

Impact of IPL on International Cricket

Tags: , ,

When we first saw it, we knew it was a revolution. Today, it has become a habit.

The Indian Premier League has been the biggest upheaval the game of cricket has ever seen. With time, the formats reduced from the Test matches to One-Dayers and then, the latest, 20 over games, the shortest format of the game till date, which is packed with full throttle entertainment, excitement and energy.

Taking a cue from ICL, BCCI successfully capitalised on the idea of city based rivalry and brought to the fore the rivalry that was only spoken of but never witnessed. The IPL 2008 entered the history books of the game and Indian Premier League 2009 is expected to repeat the success.

No sooner had the inaugural season ended, talks had already begun as to when the IPL 2009 will begin, which players will be traded, who will replace MS Dhoni as the most expensive player and so on and so forth. The craze for the profligate tournament can be weighed by the ripple effect of the rumours of it being cancelled had. IPL was everywhere, the news channels carried it as ‘Breaking News’, the newspapers as their ‘Headlines’ and magazines as their ‘Cover Story’. Eyes on television and adrenalin pumped in anticipation of the tournament’s fate. The shortest format of the game started to be known as IPL Cricket rather than T20 cricket.

The first edition of the lucrative and extravagant tournament saw what the gentleman’s game had never seen, or let us say, took notice of. The IPL news was everywhere. The ‘Big Daddys’ of the international arena came together to play for the same team and a Delhi resident supporting the home team, Delhi Daredevils, cheered and celebrated when Sachin Tendulkar was dismissed. Such has been the impact of IPL on international cricket that an Indian prays for Andrew Symonds’ century and a third umpire decision in favour of Shoaib Akhtar. What more can be said!

No matter what players have to say regarding their ‘priority’ to put their country before IPL, money is undoubtedly a criteria for everyone and the T20 League by the BCCI provides plenty of that. It is only in this country that cricket is a religion, its citizens the worshippers and players their demi-gods. India is the hub of cricket and its land, the route to monetary benefits from the game, the airlines the carrier of players to bring in here.

Who would not look forward to a match where Sanath Jayasuriya would open the batting with Sachin Tendulkar versus a team comprising of Adam Gilchrist, Herschelle Gibbs, Shahid Afridi and Andrew Symonds?

If, on one hand, IPL forced Indian supporters to cheer for the Symonds and Watsons, it weaved the cricket playing nations closer too, and it undoubtedly did. After the Sydney fiasco, who would have thought Indians would be cheering for Ricky Ponting’s success?

Would Swapnil Asnodkar have, in his wildest dreams, thought of sharing the dressing room with the King of spin, Shane Warne? The answer to this question is either a ‘No’ or a ‘No’. IPL indeed puts the stars of the future under the right guidance of the legends of the game so that they are shaped to perfection to carry the load of their respective nations besides supporting them financially and rewarding them for their non-stop struggle in domestic circuit.

The Indian Premier League can well be related to the English Premier League football where the concept is the same. Players from every country are traded for huge sums to play for various clubs and thus every club comprises of the giants of the game from different countries and states. This has provided the perfect platform to players on the domestic circuit to showcase their talent and prove a point to the selectors of the national team which, otherwise, remains in the backdrop. Not everyone follows the domestic level of the game and thus limelight evades them which is not the case with IPL.

The ICC has always strived to put cricket on a global stage. They gave Bangladesh a Test status, included 16 teams in a World Cup edition, but all of its initiatives to put the game on a global platform failed, and failed miserably. The IPL South Africa might just be a start to ICC’s goal achievement programme.

An example could probably help the ICC. Suppose Bhaichung Bhutia gets a contract with Manchester United. People in India will then gain further interest in football and start rooting for Manchester United. Similarly, if the IPL authorities or the franchisee spot a cricketer from Holland, or a country where cricket is not as famous, and give him an IPL contract, people in that particular country will start viewing the game, thus popularising it.

In this fashion, who knows, maybe someday, ICC’s so-far failed objective of globalising cricket might just come true and we get to see the gentleman’s game in the Olympics too!

International Cricket – Jayasuriya Scores a Ton But India Still Wins

Tags: , , , , , ,

The Indian cricket team were outstanding with the bat  as Gautam Gambhir, Suresh Raina and Mahendra Singh Dhoni gave India the necessary firepower in a match played in Dambulla. Gambhir, India’s opening batsman scored a 62 and Raina had a 54 and posted 113 runs for the second wicket as India had lost Sachin Tandulkar (5) to a doubtful leg-before decision as they chased the score of 247 to secure a victory.

Dhoni then stepped up to the plate as he continued the scoring his teammates showed as he hit  a 61 (not out) posting 44 runs for the fourth wicket with Yuvraj Singh who scored 23 and an added 66 runs in tandem with Rohit Sharma who had a 25 (not out). India reached their target with 11 balls left.

For the home team,  Sanath Jayasuriya had a score of 107 as he notched his 28th ODI century. He also became the second man to play cricket to pass 13,000 runs in one day internationals during his innings. He also became the oldest player to score a century in one day Supporting Jayasuriya was Kumar Sangakkara who had 44.

India actually won the toss but opted to field, putting the Sri Lankans under enormous pressure to produce early. Tillakaratne Dilshan was run out for a duck during the first over. Sangakkara and Jayasuriya then posted for 118 for the second wicket. But Sangakkara failed to reach a half century and Jayasuriya had his shot catched by Munaf Patel at mid-off.

Sri Lanka Captain Mahela Jayawardene fell for 11 and Farveez Maharoof added 35. However, Ishant Sharma captured three wickets to set Sri Lanka back once again.

India didn’t have an awesome start as well as Sachin Tendulkar was perceived out by lbw as left-arm seamer Thilan Thushara threw outside leg-stump and the ball grazed Tendulkar on the pads. Kumar Dharmasena stuck to his decision of lbw even when replays of the play showed the height of the ball was questionable.

Gambhir, a left-handed batsman and who batted first in place of regular Indian opening batsman Virender Sehwag who was sidelined because of injury, then made up for Tendulkar’s failure. Raina almost got out but was saved when Dilshan dropped the ball. It somehow gave Raina a new lease on life as he and Gambhir started to connect and amassed their total cricket scores. The pair faced Sri Lanka’s awesome wicket takers in Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis. Sri Lanka finally dismissed the duo. Gambhir tried to hit over the top of Murali but was caught at long-off. Raina was run out moments later as he attempted a second run off Mendis.

It was then Dhoni’s turn to shine and lead his side to victory as he produced a remarkable performance.

International Twenty Twenty Cricket: Top Statistics

Tags: , , ,

Cricket is now entering the real global arena. Now it is also being considered for Olympics. It is richer, smarter and yes short in duration too. Cricket is faster today than ever before. Let alone ODI (One Day Cricket) even Test Cricket has gained momentum. There are more decisive Test Matches than ever witnessed in 150 years history of cricket.

The reason is; ICC is now focusing on its entertainment and marketable value. Adrenaline rush is what attracts people towards cricket and as a matter of fact to any other sport. Introduction of T20 (Twenty Twenty) is the latest addition to cricket’s line extension. In this format you get results in just couple of hours, where in past you had to wait for five days just to watch a draw or rain struck weather condition.
Pitches are now made in a fashion where factor of speed is being exploited. Be it is a fast bowler or a hard-hitting batsman; people are loving them no matter where they belong to.

IPL-Indian Premier League is one such success story, where international frontiers are abolished and players from various countries team up to provide top quality entertainment.

Statistics are now evaluated more on strike rate rather than any other factor. From batsmen or a bowlers their ability to sizzle the crowd is what brings them accolade as well huge perks.

Many cricketing nations have responded differently to T20 (Twenty Twenty) format. Australia is one opponent to this format and has no adjusted well despite their dominance on world cricket.

Their love for Test and ODI has taken it’s toll and their supremacy in the game has made them rigid about the latest advancements in the rules of the game. Addicted to winning, Australia has failed to impress repeatedly in T20 (Twenty Twenty) format.

In a similar decider on 28th Feb’ 2010, Australia lost T20 to New Zealand after being drawn in stipulated twenty overs. Later in what they called the “Super Over”, Australia made six runs in six balls, whereas New Zealand won the match by scoring nine off four balls.

Such exhilarating dynamics being introduced in international cricket is putting an accelerator on the game’s fame. IPL and T20 are pushing the game to a brand new audience and level. The day is not far when ICC’s hopes to make cricket’s status equal to soccer will come true.
