Cricket is a bat-and-ball team sport that is first documented as being played in southern England in the 16th century. By the end of the 18th century, cricket had developed to the point where it had become the national sport of England. The expansion of the British Empire led to cricket being played overseas and by the mid-19th century the first international matches were being held. Today, the game’s governing body, the International Cricket Council (ICC), has 104 member countries.[1] With its greatest popularity in the Test playing countries, cricket is widely regarded as the world’s second most popular sport, after association football.[2][3][4] The ICC oversees both men’s and women’s cricket.

The rules of the game are known as the Laws of Cricket.[5] These are maintained by the ICC and the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), which holds the copyright. A cricket match is played on a cricket field at the centre of which is a pitch. The match is contested between two teams of eleven players each.[6] One team bats, trying to score as many runs as possible without being dismissed (“out”) while the other team bowls and fields, trying to dismiss the other team’s batsmen and limit the runs being scored. When the batting team has used all its available overs or has no remaining batsmen, the roles become reversed and it is now the fielding team’s turn to bat and try to outscore the opposition.

There are several variations in the length of a game of cricket. In professional cricket this ranges from a limit of 20 overs per side (Twenty20) to a game played over 5 days (Test cricket). Depending on the form of the match being played, there are different rules that govern how a game is won, lost, drawn or tied.

Objectives
A typical cricket field.

A cricket match is played between two teams (or sides) of eleven players each on a field of variable size and shape. The ground is grassy and is prepared by groundsmen whose jobs include fertilising, mowing, rolling and levelling the surface. Field diameters of 140–160 yards (130–150 m) are usual. The perimeter of the field is known as the boundary and this is sometimes painted and sometimes marked by a rope that encircles the outer edge of the field. The Laws of Cricket do not specify the size or shape of the field[7] but it is often oval – one of cricket’s most famous venues is called The Oval.

The objective of each team is to score more runs than the other team and to completely dismiss the other team. In one form of cricket, winning the game is achieved by scoring the most runs, even if the opposition has not been completely dismissed. In another form, it is necessary to score the most runs and dismiss the opposition in order to win the match, which would otherwise be drawn.

Before play commences, the two team captains toss a coin to decide which team shall bat or bowl first. The captain who wins the toss makes his decision on the basis of tactical considerations which may include the current and expected field and weather conditions.

The key action takes place in a specially prepared area of the field (generally in the centre) that is called the pitch. At either end of the pitch, 22 yards (20 m) apart, are placed the wickets. These serve as a target for the bowling (aka fielding) side and are defended by the batting side which seeks to accumulate runs. A run is scored when the batsman has run the length of the pitch after hitting the ball with his bat, although as explained below there are many ways of scoring runs.[8] If the batsmen are not attempting to score any more runs, the ball is dead and is returned to the bowler to be bowled again.
The bowling side seeks to dismiss the batsmen by various means until the batting side is all out, whereupon the side that was bowling takes its turn to bat and the side that was batting must take the field.

In professional matches, there are 15 people on the field while a match is in play. Two of these are the umpires who regulate all on-field activity. Two are the batsmen, one of whom is the striker as he is facing the bowling; the other is called the non-striker. The roles of the batsmen are interchangeable as runs are scored and overs are completed. The fielding side has all 11 players on the field together. One of them is the bowler, another is the wicketkeeper and the other nine are called fielders. The wicketkeeper (or keeper) is nearly always a specialist but any of the fielders can be called upon to bowl.  VISIT   WWW.IPL2010.TK

Indian Premier League Is A Suicidal Event

Tags: , , , ,

The staging of World Cup in sub continent would not be a better choice.

Mumbai attacks and early calling off the Indian Cricket League matches and the then tour of England were the most wisely taken decisions. Security of the foreign players would always be of extreme importance. The recent attack on Sri Lankan players is also an eye opening incident for many teams who were expressing their reservations on touring the Sub-Continent.

The change of venue of ICC Champions Trophy was very much necessary as the whole Sub-Continent is at the tip of a volcano. The losing of war by Tamil Tigers, the beating of Talibans and Terrorist forces in Pakistani Northern Areas, rising insurgency by many forces inside India like Ram Sena, ULFA, Naxalites etc and Mutiny in Bangladeshi Army are the events and the facts which are growing the deadly threats for the international sportsmen who are willing to play in this region.

Before advocating the staging of sports event in the countries like India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, we must understand that the level of security forces and their expertise can be termed as out of comparison to that of handful of terrorists who can easily complete their mission successfully besides heavy security measures. Mumbai or Lahore, the terrorist inflicted heavy casualties and were extremely efficient as compared to the forces fought with them. Had the terrorists succeeded in taking Sri Lankan players as hostage, situation would have been more than worst. Mumbai was a standoff situation and the terrorists were surrounded and they had to bear the casualty. But the question arises, what if they will overcome their mistakes in their next attempt and would be able to nab any participating international player of the Indian Premier League (IPL)?

Besides all the assurances, one must understand that security agencies, police and paramilitary forces in India displayed their extreme helplessness during the Mumbai attacks. Their capabilities are not seriously enhanced after such a painful experience and frankly there is no change till today in their approach to handle the terrorism’s threat. Terrorists may have well evaluated and understood that Indian forces are not at all capable to defend any severe assault if happens this time at the time of IPL. The venues are scattered and great number of players would be traveling under heavy security promised by IPL management. But, can we expect that the security personnel have been trained amply or would be even more agile??? Pakistan also made similar promises and assurances but the result is visible. To know about the capability of Indian Police and Paramilitary, it is so easy to surf around the internet and understand the kind of training catered and weaponry used by them which undoubtedly is extremely out dated and sometimes does not even work at the time of any kind of face to face combat. The Policemen especially the low ranked are extremely low paid, living in absurd conditions beneath the poverty level. After their death in any encounter their family is not supported properly by the Government. In these circumstances it is hard to expect that any police officer would risk his life when he knows that his family will suffer helplessly in the end.

People of the Sub-Continent should understand that we can only held ourselves responsible if we risk the lives of foreign players who would come here to entertain us but God forbid leave with extremely horrible memories and bruises on their bodies.

Right now our Governments should act with close coordination and find the root cause of terrorism inside our countries and eliminate social injustice in the society. We should work hard to minimize poverty in this region and settle our mutual disputes which cause confrontation and perpetual tensions among the neighboring nations. For the betterment of the people living in the sub continent it is necessary that we should work harder than before and eliminate all the threats which have made even the sports, unsafe in this region.

I personally feel that we cannot put pressure on Foreign Players to play cricket or participate in any sporting event in this region by putting their lives at risk. It is also true that the wealth of the whole world cannot buy a single extra moment of life. This is my sincere advice to all the cricketing nations that Sub-continent is presently an unsafe region to play cricket. Any decision should be taken after complete assessment of security plan and available facilities. We can only feel the pain and trauma which Sri Lankan cricketers experienced in Lahore. But putting lives of many players in danger again on extremely vulnerable event of IPL would be a mistake people would not forgive us for long.

Let us hope that we could be able to develop our security arrangements to such a level that we could successfully stage the coming World Cup Cricket event in the Sub-Continent with confidence and with peace of mind.

ICL – The Rebel Cricket League

Tags: , ,

The Indian Cricket League (ICL), is a private cricket league that runs parallel to the Indian Premier League (IPL) managed by BCCI. The biggest tournaments with international players follow the Twenty20 format, while there is a domestic tournament following the 50-over method. Matches were initially held at Tau Devi Lal stadium in Panchkula, near Chandigarh, Lal Bahadur Stadium in Hyderabad, and at Tau Devi Lal Stadium in Gurgaon, near New Delhi. However, since 2008 games are played across more venues within India.

ICL Season
The first edition had 6 teams, which expanded to 8 in early 2008 and added one more in the second half of the same year. Players participating in this league have been banned by several cricket boards of their respective countries as this is an unsanctioned private league.

History Of ICL
Zee Telefilms (part of the Essel group, which is promoted by Subhash Chandra) bid for the telecast rights to the 2003 Cricket World Cup. Although the highest bid, it was unsuccessful. In 2004, Subhash Chandra again bid for telecast rights and ended up in an inconclusive court battle. He made another bid for the 2006 ICC Champions Trophy rights and once again lost. He responded by creating the ICL. “They denied us the cricket content,” says Himanshu Mody, business head of ICL and Zee’s sports, “so, we had to create our own content”.

Structure Of ICL

Each team will be coached by a former international cricketer and will comprise four international, two Indian and eight budding domestic players. Essel Group is also planning to set up cricket academies all over the country. The BCCI has been assured that it is free to draw from ICL’s talent pool. The league became active in November 2007 with matches in the Twenty20 format. For more information see here
